Also known as Escape to Victory (1981). This movie is a kick (sorry). Classic WWII escape plot with real actors AND real soccer players. Top billing and face time to Pelé, of course, but Osvaldo Ardiles pulls off the sickest trick in the film: a rainbow past his dazzled Nazi defender. Even cranky old Max Von Sydow has to stand and applaud. You also get to see pre-Rambo Stallone prowl through scenes, young and fresh, looking like he still cares about the craft of acting. He and the rest of the cast seem to be having a hoot.
This film proved prophetic in finding Sly a place on the team as the goalkeeper. American goalies have been the biggest soccer export that this country has seen so far. Kasey Keller, Brad Friedel & current US team #1 Tim Howard all made big splashes playing at the top level in England.
