Award-Winning Animated Film THE SECRET OF KELLS
Hits the Small Town

Ellensburg Film Festival Provides Movie-Going Experience Not Found at Multiplex

ELLENSBURG – Animation lovers will soon have the chance to view the limited-release feature The Secret of Kells right here in Ellensburg. The surprise 2010 Oscar nominee for Best Animated Feature will be among 35 foreign and independent films playing in town at the Ellensburg Film Festival (EFF) Oct. 1-3. The critically acclaimed, crowd-pleasing Irish feature will screen at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 2 at the SURC Theatre on Central Washington University’s campus.

“We’re hoping to bring underrepresented films to audiences of all ages,” EFF Board President Sarah Haven said. “The Secret of Kells is one of the most unique and beautiful animated films in recent history. It would be a shame for families to miss this quiet gem.”

The Secret of Kells, an enchanting tale inspired by Irish mythology, tells the story of 12-year-old Brendan who sets out on a dangerous quest to complete a magical illuminated manuscript. The story takes place in the eighth century, a perilous time when Vikings threatened to destroy Irish civilization.

Brendan’s adventures are exciting enough to keep children entertained, while the film’s vivid beauty appeals to adult viewers. The Secret of Kells is an artistic throwback to the golden age of animation and is almost entirely hand-drawn. The EFF screening is open to all ages, but amazon.com lists the film as best suited for children 8 and older due to “some scary imagery and violence.”

Tickets can be purchased one week in advance at Gallery One, located at 408 N. Pearl Street or during the festival at all venues (Brix, SURC Theatre, Raw Space, Grand Meridian Cinema). Single tickets are $6 for general admission, and $3 for those under 18 and students (with valid ID). “SixTix” deals run $30 and allow any choice of six EFF films. Festival passes are $50 and provide admission to all screenings and events as well as a film festival T-shirt.

The Ellensburg Film Festival is now in its sixth year and grows more popular each year. The three-day, high-profile arts event takes place the first weekend of October and showcases local and international features, documentaries and short films as well as honored guests, special events, live musical performances and much more. With an annual attendance of more than 2,000, the film festival reaches a broad and diverse audience each year. For more information, visit http://www.ellensburgfilmfestival.com/.
